Slug the President?

Senator elect Jim Webb had a confrontation with the President today that made him angry enough that he wanted to hit George W. The President’s offending remark? “How’s your boy?”

Apperantly this innocent sounding comment about Webb’s son, who’s military service incidentally made up the majority of Webb’s election platform, was so offending that he wanted to strike the Commander In Chief.

Now I in NO WAY support any sort of violence toward the President of the United States, it would have been interesting if this jerk had hit George W. It would have been hard for him to be a senator after the Secret Service arrested him. I’m not sure what the penalty is for assaulting the President, but I’m sure it’s steep. I hope the great state of Virgina is proud of electing this man to the Senate - he sure isn’t acting in the way most of us would expect a Senator to act.

On the other hand, maybe we should all follow his lead. I encourage every father out there to give the next guy who asks about your offspring a knuckle sandwich!

Veronica Mars changes her theme song

Veronica Mars

I started watching Veronica Mars last year for two reasons. The first is the lovely, yet talented Kristen Bell. The second was the theme song.

Just today I read that someone at the show decided to remix the theme song.

The original, like the show, is edgy and unpredictable.

The new version is an overproduced shadow of it’s original self.

This better not be a reflection on the whole show…

UPDATE

Well, apparently the change in the theme song is a reflection on the whole show. Veronica seemed smarter as a high school student than she does as a college freshmen. The dialog seems poor and Kristen’s delivery is weak.

And no, I’m not just angry that she didn’t send me a autographed picture like she promised…

HOA Bullys back down

Looks like the lady that thinks a peace sign is a good christmas decoration is off the hook. The Loma Linda Home Owners Board of Directors has caved in the face of public opposition.

Amazing how bullys scatter like cockroaches when someone exposes them.

Plummer out, Cutler in

Denver Broncos coach, Mike Shanahan announced today that rookie Jay Cutler will be the starting quarterback next week against the Seattle Seahawks replacing Jake Plummer.

This is a big decision for Shanahan. I’ve always liked Plummer, even back to his days at ASU. It is unfortunate the Broncos haven’t been able to return to the Super Bowl with Plummer at the helm. It’s not clear if the problem is with Plummer or if it’s Jake’s supporting cast, but the overall ineffectiveness of the Broncos offense this year is undeniable.

Part of me hopes that Cutler can step in and take the Broncos to the playoffs. Another part of me hopes that Plummer will be vindicated and Cutler will fall flat on his face. No matter what, you can be sure Denver fans will be merciless to the new guy. First bad game he has they will be burning a Cutler effigy in the Mile High parking lot…

The Day After

As part of the Sci Fi channel’s Thanksgiving Weekend programming they aired the 1983 Made-for-TV movie The Day After.

For those of you not familiar with this movie, it was a Reagan era nuclear war protest movie showing the worst potential results of a nuclear exchange between the United States and the Russians. As horriffic as a mutual assured destruction scenario would be, this movie is exceedingly bleak due to the utter dispair of the characters in the story. As the movie winds down there is absolutely no hope for any kind of future. American citizens completely revert to a primtive state - a little over the top, but it was the 80’s.

In 1983 I was 11 years old, in the sixth grade. I remember distinctly the original broadcast of The Day After - primarily because my parents wouldn’t let us watch it. It was a big deal at the school. I don’t remember now if the teachers were advocating watching the movie, or just responding to the questions of the students, but it was the talk of the school for several days. Of course, I was the only one of my friends who didn’t get to see it, not that I fault my parents for that. It probably wasn’t good viewing material for an 11 year old.

The biggest thing that struck me as I watched this classic piece of cold war media was how much our world has changed. From the 1950s to the 1980s the whole world lived under the spectre of a nuclear attack that could have destroyed civilization as we know it. Now, the worst that we could possibly picture is a single madman setting off a single device, probably closer to a dirty bomb than a 25 Megaton ICBM. While terrorist activities are still valid threats, they are literally many degrees of magnitude lower than what we faced a mere two decades ago. In spite of the diminished threat and relatively safe world we currently live in we still allow a constant fear cloud our political and social decisions. Of course, the 9/11 attacks did unequivocally demonstrate that terrorism can and will happen here in the US. Still, it’s unfortunate that our society isn’t able to mature and face threats rationally.

Pagosa Springs HOA bans Peace Wreath

A Pagosa Springs homeowner’s Association is fining a resident $25/day for hanging a wreath in the shape of a peace sign. Other residents interpret the peace sign as an occult/anti-christian symbol or as a direct attack on the war in Iraq and are offended - causing the fines.

This woman lives in the United States and should be free to display any symbol she wants on her house. While the occult link is a bit of a stretch, and the idea of a few lines on the side of your house changing the world a bit naive the lady is entitled to her opinion.

At least she got the symbol right.

Vick makes obscene gesture

Michael Vick

After this Sunday’s 31-13 loss to the New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons star quarterback, Michael Vick, felt the need to give the crowd an obscene gesture.

What is with this guy? This is his 5th year in the league, he is an amazingly talented player, why can’t he act like a professional. Sure, he was labeled this week as a “coach killer”, but his behavior only helps confirm statements like that.

I sincerely hope Vick can get his act together. If he could act like a decent human being I could root for him and enjoy watching him play. Careers in the NFL are very short, Vick needs to figure this out and get serious about the game and show some leadership while he still has time.
