Dick Brave & the Backbeats is a band led by German singer-songwriter Sascha Schmitz. In 2003 and 2004 Dick Brave performed live, and recorded an album titled Dick This! The band broke up in November 2004, so this album of covers may be all we ever see from Dick. There are quite a few videos on You Tube of the band, but I picked this one. Avril Lavigne’s Complicated is a favorite of mine.

I don’t listen to “Pop” radio much these days, just can’t take the Fergie, Kanye West, or Taylor Swifts of the world. Interestingly the hip hop, R&B and other music types that have taken over the pop charts in the last decade or two has forced much of the “power pop” type acts to the “Modern Rock” genre.

I say all of that to introduce this week’s Music Pick, Rooney. Rooney’s single, “When Did Your Heart Go Missing?” is currently getting airplay on the local Denver “Modern Rock” radio station. While I appreciate the introduction, this California band is much more influenced by 80′s power pop than anything that has been in the alt music scene in the last 10 years.

“When Did Your Heart Go Missing?” sounds like it just fell off the sound track to a John Hughes movie, even down to the semi cheesey voice-over last verse:

Things were so good
We had a little dream
A little dream together
Buy a house, settle down, do our thing
But you disappeared on me
And your heart, your heart went missin’…

I suggest you just watch the video for yourself and let me know what you think.

Honestly, much of the music I’ve been listening to hasn’t been something I really wanted to share. They might have a song or two that were good, but some of the other lyrics and band names were borderline offensive. Since I have some family and friends that read this blog I decided not to endorse some of these bands.

The Bees (U.S) are a different story. Their strong songwriting and largely acoustic harmonies should be palatable to nearly everyone.

The Bees (U.S) have a great mellow rock sound. Perfect as a backdrop for your holiday party or while sitting by the fire with a glass of wine.

I ran across Naama while listening to a podcast (which shall remain nameless since I didn’t like it) that played an excerpt of her excellent rendition of Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire.

I visited Naama’s site and found she has a whole ep available for free download. Her music is beautiful and I would highly recommend it.
